Boosting a post on Facebook and Instagram feels productive. You spot a post doing well, Meta suggests promoting it, and a few taps later your budget is out the door. It’s easy for a reason: the Boost button is designed to be quick and simple. But, quick and simple isn’t the same as strategic.
Boosting and Ads Manager aren’t the same tool
When you boost a post, you choose from a short list of goals, set a basic audience and pick a budget. That’s about it. Ads Manager is the full advertising platform behind Facebook and Instagram, and it’s where the real decisions get made. It’s also where I spend my time when I manage ads for the businesses I work with.
What you give up when you boost
You can use conversion tracking with boosted posts, but it won’t let you select which conversion to optimize for. That one setting, among others, is the missing piece. Without it, the algorithm isn’t learning who your real customers are. It’s guessing, and your budget pays for that guess.
Ads Manager gives you more control over:
- Who sees your ads, and who doesn’t
- Which placements you run on (all of them or just a few)
- What Meta actually optimizes for
- How your budget gets spent
- Testing what’s working, instead of guessing
What a media strategy looks like instead
A media strategy on Meta Ads starts with a business goal, such as leads, bookings or sales. From there, you decide who your ads should reach, where they should show up and how you’ll measure results beyond likes and reach. Then you test, keep what works and cut what doesn’t. A boosted post can put one post in front of more people, but it can’t do that work for you.
If you’re paying someone to build and manage your ads on Facebook and Instagram, you should be getting years of strategy behind every dollar, not through a button.
The bottom line
Boosting a post isn’t a media strategy. It’s an easy shortcut for wasting money. If you want your ad budget to work as hard as you do, build it in Ads Manager with a plan behind it.
